What Will Be Your One Word for 2021?

Create Focus and Energy with One Word

The New Year is here and I have a quick little test for you. (Don’t you just love pop quizzes?)

When I think about my plans for 2019, I am…

a.  Not setting goals.  They never worked before and it is a waste of my time.

b.  Evaluating my past year and setting new goals based on my accomplishments last year

c.  Feeling totally overwhelmed.  I’m not sure what I accomplished last year (maybe survival?) or what I want to accomplish next year.  Maybe I’ll just take a nap and think about it later.

This time of year, people love to ask you, “Did you set goals for 2021? What are your New Year’s Resolutions?”

It can be exhausting and annoying.  I know. This is especially true for women. We’re trying to energize and maintain relationships while working a job or running a business. Meanwhile everyone is telling us to set goals, create a plan for our future and oh yes, take care of ourselves while we’re at it. We’re trying to balance all those spinning plates in the air and cringing every time we hear one crash. Who are we kidding?

Instead of setting goals, what if we just came up with one word to provide focus, inspiration and direction for our year? What if that one word became a north star?  An intention to align with? A lens through which to view the world?

For the last several years, I have chosen a word in January to give me focus for the year. Choosing the word takes a bit of thought.  I want it to stretch me and ground me at the same time.  I want it to encourage and inspire.

The first year my word was JOY and the next year, as I left my school counseling job of twenty years and moved into entrepreneurship, I chose, ADVENTURE. Since that time, I have chosen the words LOVE, OPEN and EXPAND. This year, 2021, my word is GROW.

How can you use your word to influence your year?

  • As you make plans, make sure that your word is incorporated into the plan.
  • Consider your relationships and how applying the word might renew and enhance them.
  • Use the word to challenge and energize your business plans and goals.
  • Focus on your personal health and well-being. How can you use your word to encourage a healthy life-style in the days ahead.

Using one word to create a theme for the year can be a simple but effective way to structure your year and achieve your goals.

What about you?  Want to develop your focus for the upcoming year?  Change your world? What will your one word be for 2021? Pick one word as your guidepost for the new year.  I promise you will be astonished at the energy it brings to your life.

I’m in the same boat, Lynne, as I’ve yet to settle on my one word for 2015. This year’s was “wait.” It really helped me not to rush things in my life and to lean more on God and His timing. I’ll be so interested to know what word you choose!
    Blessings!
